2016 Summer Road Trip
Subway Cave is a large lava tube in Northern California. Lava tubes are created when flowing lava moves beneath a hardened surface of cooled lava. Subway Cave is one of the largest and most impressive lava tubes I have been to, though Lava Beds National Monument has some fun ones that I was impressed with. You can walk right through Subway Cave from one end to the other.
During this trip, we also visited the headwaters of the Sacramento River in the town of Mt. Shasta, where there was a really fun playground, and an excellent place to fill up water bottles. |
2015 Summer Road Trip
Burney Falls, an impressive spring-fed waterfall in Northern California. Because of the geology of the area, the creek seems to appear out of nowhere to create the falls.

2015 Life Changing Adventures
Rowan Ian Campbell, born February 22, 2015. Despite a 50% genetic chance of getting blue or green eyes, Rowan has beautiful brown eyes like his mother.
You can work out a Punnett Square yourself: Mrs. Campbell is heterozygous for her brown eyes (her father has green eyes), while Mr. Campbell is homozygous for his blue eyes. What is the percent chance that Baby Campbell will end up with blue or green eyes? |
2014 Museum Visit
When in Toronto, Canada for my cousin's wedding, we spent an afternoon geeking out over the amazing fossils at the Royal Ontario Museum.

2013 Nevada Summer Road Trip
This summer's vacation was spent exploring Nevada. First, we drove to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park and saw a bed of Ichthyosaur fossils, still lying right where they had been discovered. The Ichthyosaur is Nevada's state fossil because of the amazing fossils discovered at this site, which for years were the largest Ichthyosaur fossils known. Ichthyosaurs were marine predators that lived 245-90 million years ago, when Nevada was under the ocean. After seeing the fossils, we drove to Great Basin National Park, where we visited Lehman Caves, hiked through a Bristlecone Pine Tree grove, and saw Nevada's only glacier. Did you know Nevada had a glacier? It was really exciting to be able to touch a Bristlecone Pine Tree, because Bristlecones are the oldest living trees in the world (I sat underneath a Bristlecone that was more than 4,000 years old!). We finished our journey by driving around the base of the Ruby Mountains, and hiking in Lamoille Canyon.
